  Acknowledgments

It’s hard to know where to begin in thanking all those who’ve championed this book. But Sheila Crowley at Curtis Brown is a very good start. Without Sheila’s ambition, energy and vision, You Me Everything would not exist, let alone have propelled my writing career in such an unexpected and wonderful direction.

Thanks also to Rebecca Ritchie for her enthusiastic support and all-round loveliness. And to Anne Bihan, whose hard work and passion for this novel is the reason it’s being translated into so many languages.

One of the most frequently asked questions of any author is: “Would you like your book to become a movie?” I’d hardly allowed myself to fantasize about such a lofty ambition, until Luke Speed at Curtis Brown delivered the news that You Me Everything had been optioned for a film by Temple Hill’s John Fischer. Huge thanks to both.

Thank you to my American editor, Pamela Dorman at Viking Penguin, with whom it’s been an honor and pleasure to work. I’m grateful, not just for the opportunity to write for readers in the U.S., but also for the care she’s lavished on this book and the immense amount I’ve learned from her during the editing process.

It has been a joy to work on the new direction of my writing with my long-standing publishers, Simon & Schuster UK. Thank you to Suzanne Baboneau, Jo Dickinson and Sara-Jade Virtue—for their commitment, unstinting hard work and, in S-J’s case, gin. Thanks also to Clare Hey for her enthusiasm and direction on the first draft.

I’m indebted to the Huntington’s Disease Association for their assistance when I was researching this book. It felt daunting until I came across Bill Crowder. His guidance and willingness to answer my endless questions was invaluable, as was the time generously given by Cath Stanley, who was kind enough to read through the final draft.

Thanks to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America for allowing me to reproduce the section from their website featured in chapter 26.

Thank you to Frederique Polet, my editor from Presses de la Cité, for polishing up the French dialogue, significantly improving my own efforts, which stemmed from a rather rusty A level.

Finally, thanks to my lovely family: Mark, Otis, Lucas, Isaac and my mum and dad. Also to Uncle Colin for the number crunching and to my brother, Stephen, for using his best lighting on my author photos.
